When My Flight Sim PC Started Falling Out of the Sky: The Intel Crash Saga
We all know how hard a flight sim pushes a computer. Mine had been rock solid for the last couple of years - and then, out of nowhere, it started crashing. Hard. This is the story of what went wrong, how I tracked it down, and what it might mean if your machine starts doing the same thing.

It started small, then got ugly fast
At first it was the odd freeze. Then a “blue screen” here and there. Within a couple of weeks it snowballed into the PC locking up every few minutes — totally frozen, no mouse, no keyboard, nothing. The only way out was to hold the power button down until it switched off, then start again... only for it to freeze again minutes later.
The frustrating part? I’d done everything you’re “supposed” to do:
Reinstalled my graphics drivers from scratch.
Updated all my system software and firmware.
Checked the hard drives for errors.
Ran the built-in Windows repair tools.
None of it made any difference. That’s usually a big clue that you’re not dealing with a software problem at all.
The smoking gun in Windows’ own diary
Here’s something most people don’t realise: Windows keeps a detailed diary of everything that goes wrong — it’s called the Event Log. Buried in there was the real story.
My processor (the “brain” of the computer, in my case a high-end Intel Core i9-14900KS) had been quietly logging hardware errors for weeks. Think of them like a pilot noticing a gauge flickering: the engine’s still running, the autopilot corrects for it, and you carry on — but something isn’t right.
Even more telling, the diary showed the errors were speeding up:
Mid-May: one tiny error. Corrected automatically. No symptoms.
June: a handful, getting more frequent.
July: constant errors, then the crashes and freezes.
That accelerating pattern is the fingerprint of a part that’s slowly wearing out — not a one-off glitch, and not a software bug.
The villain: a known Intel defect
It turns out my exact type of processor is caught up in a well-documented, industry-wide problem with certain Intel chips from the last couple of generations (the “13th and 14th Gen” desktop chips). Intel has publicly acknowledged it.
In plain English, here’s what happens:
The processor was, over time, being fed slightly too much voltage — a bit like consistently over-revving an engine. It runs fine for a good while, but that constant extra stress gradually damages the chip from the inside. Eventually it can’t keep up, and it starts making mistakes — which show up as freezes and crashes.
And this explains the most baffling part: “but it was perfect for two years!”
That’s exactly how this fault behaves. The damage builds up invisibly in the background. The computer keeps working perfectly right up until the chip crosses a tipping point — and then it seems to fall apart almost overnight. It’s not that something suddenly changed; it’s that a slow problem finally reached the surface.
Why do flight simmers get bitten by this more than most? Because our hobby hammers the processor for hours at a time at full tilt. All that sustained load is exactly the kind of stress that brings this fault out.
The fix (part one): a firmware update
Intel released a repair in the form of a firmware update — specifically an update to the tiny bit of built-in software that controls how the processor behaves (its “microcode”), delivered through a BIOS update from the motherboard maker.
In everyday terms: it teaches the processor to stop over-revving itself. It tells the chip to ask for the correct amount of voltage instead of too much.
I updated my BIOS, and the logs confirmed the new protection is now in place. So far, so good.
The fix (part two): the catch
Here’s the important bit, and the reason I’m writing this post as a heads-up rather than a victory lap:
The firmware update stops the damage from getting worse — but it can’t undo damage that’s already been done.
If a chip has been quietly degrading for a couple of months (like mine had), there’s a real chance it’s already worn past the point of no return. The update might be enough... or the chip might simply need replacing.
As I write this, my PC has run cleanly for a full morning with zero errors — genuinely encouraging. But I’m giving it about a week of normal flying before I declare victory. If even one of those hardware errors comes back, I’ll know the chip itself needs to go.
The silver lining: because this is a recognised defect, Intel extended the warranty on these processors to five years, so a replacement is on the table if I need it.
What this means for you
If your flight sim rig has started freezing, blue-screening, or forcing you to hold the power button — especially if it used to be perfectly stable — don’t assume you did something wrong. Here’s my advice:
Don’t panic-reinstall everything. If reinstalling drivers and Windows tools doesn’t help, the problem may be physical, not software.
Check whether you have an affected processor. Intel’s 13th/14th Gen desktop chips — especially the high-end “K” and “KS” models we flight simmers love — are the ones in question.
Update your BIOS. This is the single most important step. Get the latest version from your motherboard manufacturer’s website — it contains Intel’s fix.
Watch how it behaves afterwards. A few clean days is a great sign. New freezes or crashes mean the chip may need replacing.
Know your rights. If it’s a recognised defect and your machine is only a year or two old, you’re very likely covered — either by the extended warranty or by the shop that built it.
The takeaway
The reassuring ending is that there was a reason, it was findable, and it’s a known issue with a known fix. Sometimes the most important tool in the hangar isn’t a bigger graphics card — it’s knowing where your computer writes down its own confessions.

I had been using the car analogy to describe how my brain now works. This is the best explanation to expand on that!
It worked fine for 52/53 years. About 6 months to a year before the concussions the small hiccups started occurring, to the point I was questioning early onset symptoms. I didn't completely spell it out that way, but that was what I was thinking.
The concussions were not that bad. There were no brain bleeds. Two in a row not ideal. I think the concussions fit into your shut downs or my potholes. Until you look at the log, you don't understand why slightly overrevving the engine and hitting the pothole caused the car to crash, neither were that severe.
I am now working with a faulty processor. Tech support was able to get it restarted, but it won't be the same and there isn't any warranty replacement. Now I know why I can no longer play flight sims; my processor is no longer up to the task 🤣
