Air Traffic Services Visual Flight Rules (VFR) Beginners Guide
While refreshing my knowledge about common VFR procedures, and experimenting with Microsoft Flight Simulator and SayIntentions.AI, it occurred to me that new pilots in the simulated world might benefit from a distillation of knowledge into a reference guide that walks through the common practices and procedures.
This document is intended very much as an informal “beginners guide” for users of Microsoft Flight Simulator and associated air traffic control products such as SayIntentions.AI.
The guide walks through some of the more typical patterns of communication between aircraft and controllers while performing flights under “visual flight rules” within the simulator - including:
Radio telephony 101 (basic concepts)
Communications checks
Engine start and taxi
Takeoff and departure (with and without flight following)
Closed pattern work (circuits)
Readers are of course encouraged to pursue their own research, reading, and continued learning with regard to communication, practices, and procedures in the real world. While this guide describes procedures closely replicating the real world, it should not replace the study of real-world training materials and/or exercises for real-world flight training.
Over time this document will grow, in response to feedback and requests for further information and guidance.
